T Levels Explained

T Levels are new 2-year courses which are taken after GCSEs by 16 – 19 year olds and are broadly equivalent in size to 3 A Levels. Launched in September 2020, these courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and education providers so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for entry into skilled employment, an apprenticeship or related technical study through further or higher education.

T Levels offer students practical and knowledge-based learning at a school or college and on-the-job experience through an industry placement of at least 315 hours – approximately 45 days. Different education providers will be providing different courses so that the range available for Fylde young people is as wide as possible.

Some of the courses are available at:

Preston College

Myerscough College

Blackpool and the Fylde College

The Blackpool Sixth Form College

Cardinal Newman College

The industry placement provides students with an opportunity to develop their practical and technical skills in a role directly relevant to their vocational course. They also give employers the chance to ensure that young people are developing the skills and experience that industry needs.

To help prepare for the introduction of more T Levels over the coming years, we are looking for employers across all sectors to work with education and training providers to offer industry placements now.

Benefits for your business of having an industry placement student include:

  • developing existing staff’s mentoring and management skills
  • improving the recruitment pipeline for your business
  • giving opportunities to young people from a wide range of backgrounds, leading to a more diverse workforce
  • bringing in new and imaginative ideas
  • building partnerships with local training providers

If you’re interested in offering an industry placement, you can get in touch with one of the colleges directly, they will then support you throughout the process.
